# Rates Overview

The Rates API enables you, the partner, to programmatically set buy rates for new and existing Afterpay merchants. There are several types of rates for Afterpay:

* **Default** - Default buy rate automatically assigned to new merchants unless a tier or custom buy rate has been assigned

* **Tier** - Series of buy rate tiers that are assigned to merchants based on the country and gross merchandise volume (GMV) specified during onboarding

* **Custom** - Custom buy rates that are assigned to specific merchants

> Custom rates always take precedence over tier rates and default rates. If a merchant is assigned a custom rate, tier rates and default rates are ignored and the custom rate is used.
